*International Nurses Day 2026*

“Our Nurses. Our Future. Empowered Nurses Save Lives”

Salute to all nurses of the world.

Rasheed Ahmad Chughtai

Human civilization stands upon the sacrifices of those souls who serve humanity silently, sincerely, and selflessly. Among these noble servants, nurses hold one of the highest and most sacred positions. They are the guardians of compassion, the healers of pain, the protectors of dignity, and the lamps of hope beside hospital beds during the darkest hours of life.

When families lose strength, nurses provide courage. When patients lose hope, nurses restore confidence. When humanity suffers from war, disasters, pandemics, poverty, loneliness, and old age, nurses become symbols of mercy and healing.

International Nurses Day 2026, under the inspiring theme “Our Nurses. Our Future. Empowered Nurses Save Lives,” is not merely a celebration; it is a global call to honor, empower, protect, and uplift those who dedicate their lives to caring for humanity.

Nursing is not only a profession — it is a mission of mercy, patience, sacrifice, and love.

*The Noble Status of Nurses in Islam*

Islam gives extraordinary importance to caring for the sick, elderly, weak, and vulnerable. The values embodied by nurses reflect the highest teachings of the Holy Quran and the noble traditions of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and the Ahlul Bayt (AS).

Quranic Guidance About Mercy and Service

Allah Almighty says in the Holy Quran:

> “And whoever saves one life, it is as if he has saved all mankind.”

— Surah Al-Ma’idah (5:32)

This verse perfectly reflects the spirit of nursing. Every nurse who helps save a patient participates in one of humanity’s greatest services.

Allah also says:

> “And We have not sent you, [O Muhammad], except as a mercy to the worlds.”

— Surah Al-Anbiya (21:107)

Nurses continue this mission of mercy through compassion, patience, and service to suffering humanity.

Another beautiful Quranic teaching says:

> “Speak kindly to people.”

— Surah Al-Baqarah (2:83)

A nurse’s gentle words often become medicine for wounded hearts.

Teachings of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ About Caring for the Sick

The Holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ placed immense importance on visiting and caring for the ill.

He said:

> “Whoever relieves a believer’s hardship, Allah will relieve his hardship on the Day of Judgment.”

Another Hadith states:

> “The best among people are those who benefit humanity the most.”

Nurses truly represent this Prophetic teaching because their entire lives revolve around benefiting humanity.

The Prophet ﷺ also said:

> “Show mercy to those on earth, and the One above the heavens will show mercy to you.”

The profession of nursing is therefore deeply connected with divine mercy and spiritual reward.

Sermons and Sayings of Imam Ali (AS)

Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib emphasized compassion, justice, and service to humanity throughout his life.

Imam Ali (AS) said:

> “People are of two kinds: either your brother in faith or your equal in humanity.”

This timeless principle forms the foundation of medical ethics and nursing care.

He also said:

> “The best deed is helping the oppressed and assisting the weak.”

Nurses spend their lives helping the weak, elderly, injured, disabled, and sick.

Another saying attributed to Imam Ali (AS):

> “Kindness beautifies human character.”

Nurses beautify humanity through kindness and care every single day.

Nursing: A Profession of Compassion and Sacrifice

Nurses are the backbone of healthcare systems around the world. Doctors diagnose and prescribe treatment, but nurses remain continuously beside patients — day and night.

They:
Monitor patients constantly

Administer medicines

Provide emotional support

Comfort families

Care for newborns

Assist elderly patients

Support disabled individuals

Respond during emergencies

Help during wars and pandemics

During critical illness, many patients remember the nurse’s comforting words more than the medicines themselves.

*Nurses and Motherly Care*

The care of nurses often resembles the affection of mothers.

A nurse:

Feeds patients

Cleans wounds

Helps weak patients walk

Comforts frightened children

Supports grieving families

Holds the hands of dying patients

Many elderly people in hospitals and nursing homes receive more attention and compassion from nurses than from their own relatives.

This extraordinary service reflects humanity at its highest level.

Historical Examples of Nursing and Care

Florence Nightingale

Florence Nightingale became known as “The Lady with the Lamp” during the Crimean War because she cared for wounded soldiers throughout the night.

She transformed nursing into a respected profession and emphasized hygiene, discipline, and compassion.

Her famous words remain timeless:

> “Nursing is an art.”

Islamic History and Nursing

In Islamic history, women also played important roles in caring for the wounded.

Rufaidah Al-Aslamia

Rufaidah Al-Aslamia is considered one of the first Muslim nurses. She treated wounded soldiers during the time of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and organized medical care for patients.

She became a symbol of mercy, service, and medical dedication in Islamic civilization.

Nurses During Global Crises

The world witnessed the heroism of nurses during:

The COVID-19 pandemic

Earthquakes

Floods

Wars

Refugee crises

Thousands of nurses sacrificed their own health and lives while saving patients.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, nurses worked continuously under extreme pressure while many people remained safely inside their homes. The world realized that healthcare systems cannot survive without nurses.

International Views About Nurses

*World Health Perspective*

World Health Organization repeatedly emphasizes that strong healthcare systems depend on empowered nurses.

Many international experts believe:

Nurses are essential for universal healthcare

Better nursing conditions improve patient survival

Mental health support for nurses is critical

Investment in nursing strengthens national healthcare systems

Humanitarian Organizations

Organizations such as:

International Committee of the Red Cross

have highlighted the importance of nurses in humanitarian missions, refugee camps, disaster zones, and conflict areas.

Challenges Faced by Nurses

Despite their noble role, nurses often face:

Low salaries

Long working hours

Mental stress

Emotional exhaustion

Workplace violence

Lack of appreciation

Staff shortages

Unsafe environments

Many nurses sacrifice family time and personal comfort for the sake of patients.

Suggestions to Improve the Lives and Services of Nurses

The Spiritual Greatness of Nursing

Nursing combines:

Mercy

Patience

Sacrifice

Service

Humanity

Compassion

These are among the greatest moral qualities praised by Islam and all civilizations.

A sincere nurse not only heals bodies but also comforts hearts and restores hope.

International Nurses Day 2026 reminds humanity that nurses are not merely healthcare workers — they are protectors of life, guardians of dignity, and ambassadors of compassion.

The theme:

“Our Nurses. Our Future. Empowered Nurses Save Lives”

A powerful message for the entire world.

If nurses are respected, empowered, protected, and supported, humanity itself will become healthier, safer, and more compassionate.

Nurses stand beside humanity during pain, fear, loneliness, and death. Their service is among the noblest forms of worship and humanitarian duty.

May Allah bless all nurses, protect them, strengthen them, and reward their sacrifices for humanity.

> “The service of humanity is among the greatest services to God.”
Salute to all nurses of the world.
